Pay it forward!

cheryl-livingston-2012I am a two-time breast cancer survivor, which has taught me many things. The first is to appreciate each day. With that comes the second, which is the responsibility to help others do the same. We as women have opportunities to reach out to each other everyday. What if we all made a conscious decision to extend our hand to help someone find her own voice?

There are so many ways that each of us can pass on our good fortune. We all have something to offer. We could share a friendly smile with the aloof clerk while she is checking out our groceries. Maybe she has just learned that someone in her life has a serious illness. Our smile could mean everything. Maybe we could give the new young girl in the desk next to us a little advice that we struggled to figure out when we were her age. We could volunteer to become a big sister or act as a daughter to someone without any family. Or, we could mentor a young businesswoman or a teenage girl.

I own The Loft hair skin nails, and I believe in a pay-it-forward philosophy and think others should too. Our staff members are the most important people in our salon. We feel that they should be treated with love and respect, and we should go above and beyond for them. We have learned that when we do this, we are teaching them to reach out to our guests. What better way to pay it forward than to help people feel great about themselves?
A salon is more than a place to get your hair cut; it is a retreat where you can be pampered with body massages and revitalized with a facial. It is a place to experience Reflexology to release toxins from our bodies or a make-up lesson that allows you to experiment with new shades. It is a stress-free afternoon or a getaway weekend completed in one day. It is a mini vacation without leaving town.

When these fine points of life are shared with others, not only does it influence our business associates, but it also has an effect on our families and everyone with whom we come into contact. My intention is to pay it forward, but living this way has given me something that I never anticipated. It has returned to me tenfold. I highly recommend it.
